What You Need To Know About The White German Shepherd
German Shepherds come in a variety of colors and coat lengths, but only some of these can be officially registered and shown. One German Shepherd type that has a loyal following, despite no official breed recognition, is the White German Shepherd. Other white members of other breeds such as the Boxer also face similar discrimination from national kennel club associations. They only two countries that officially recognize the breed are Switzerland and Australia.
But followers of the cult of the White German Shepherd are often glad of the lack of breed recognition. This means that their dogs are less expensive and more likely to be bred for companionship rather than for conformation. Responsible breeders are trying to breed out inherited health problems like hip dysplasia. The White German Shepherd originated and proliferated in North America from European dogs that were all pure German Shepherds. White German Shepherds are now popular in Europe and Australia.
White German Shepherds are truly white dogs, not albinos. They have dark colored eyes and often have black noses as well as pink noses. This German Shepherd type was developed in North America (giving rise to another name variant, the American Canadian White Shepherd) from purebred German Shepherds (a breed that actually originated in France, in the Alsatian province, hence their other popular name as Alsatians). The naming of these dogs is far more complex than the dog.
German Shepherd puppies, whatever their color or hair thickness, are incredibly impressionable. Anything that happens to them tends to effect them all of their lives. White German Shepherds need to be introduced to many situations and activities before they are fourteen weeks old in order to make training easier. However, there have been many abused, abandoned or special needs White German Shepherds who were literally old dogs that learned new tricks.
With the exception of coat color and possible exception of coat thickness, the White German Shepherd is, for all wants and purposes, a German Shepherd. Reading a book or web article on German Shepherd information is the same as reading one for White German Shepherds.
They act like standard German Shepherds, have the same exercise demands as standard German Shepherds and are as intelligent as standard German Shepherds. They are also prone to the same health problems as standard German Shepherds.
If you are looking for a predictably good-hearted dog, don’t mind dog hair and have room in your heart, home and wallet, the White German Shepherd is for you. Please don’t buy one from a pet store, as they get all of their puppies from inhumane puppy mills.
You can get a puppy from a breeder, but there are not as many breeders of White German Shepherds as for other German Shepherd types. Go to Petfinder.com and adopt a wonderful companion from one of the many dog rescue groups in this country.
