Training A Shar Pei Rescue Dog

You have made a wonderful decision to give a Shar Pei rescue dog a second chance in life but there are some things about the Shar Pei that you need to know before you can successfully train a Shar Pei rescue dog.

The Shar Pei is known as a very protective dog to the point of it will protect its family even if it means possible peril to itself. This type of behavior is normal and after your Shar Pei starts to feel more comfortable in your home it will start to display these tendencies.

The only time you should become alarmed is if the Shar Pei becomes territorial. Territorial behavior in a Shar Pei is an indication of past deficiencies in training that need to be fixed right away.

Your Shar Pei rescue dog is a very social animal and it can easily be taught to peacefully interact with humans and other animals as well. All the Shar Pei needs is to know that you want it to become socially adept and it will take your lead. The only thing to keep in mind with a Shar Pei rescue dog is that there will probably be an initial mistrust of humans that can only be solved by patience and the proper training to help the dog trust people again.

The Shar Pei, as was mentioned before, is a very smart dog and it can be easily trained. However with intelligence comes the ability to become very defensive and then eventually bored. The Shar Pei is very adaptable to any situation but it gets bored easily with continued repetition so make sure that training sessions are set up for your dog’s pace and not the pace of a regular breed and be ready for the dog to display some of the behaviors it used to potentially survive its abusive past.

The Shar Pei is a very powerful and aggressive dog that can easily be trained to be a great family pet. But never forget that they are aggressive by nature and if they have been through a lot then sometimes they may revert back to what they know and that is protecting themselves through aggression. But over time you should be able to get through to your dog and once you do you will have a loyal pet for many years to come.
