The Wonders Of Dog Leash Training
The joy of bringing a puppy home for the first time is really enjoyable. An owners first instinct is to baby the puppy because its attractive and tiny. Bear in mind though that doing such will make your dog spoiled and untrained which will cause a lot of behavior problems which will be harder to retrain as the dog is older and patterns are already recognized.
Dog leash training is one of these issues. Training a dog to a leash is much easier when the dog is a puppy, and is therefore small and easy to handle. When a dog is older, it is much more difficult to train it to the leash since it is physically much more able to pull the owner around and cause problems.
Steps
First thing to do is have the new puppy get familiarized to having a collar around its neck. An initial reaction that is commonly seen when a collar is first put on a pup would be trying to take it off by rolling around, scratching it or by using different means just so the collar will be removed.
It can be painful to watch this process but it is important not to remove the collar until the puppy has calmed down and becomes distracted by something else. That way he knows that he cannot get the collar removed by the other behaviors and that the collar can come on or off at any time.
The next step in dog leash training is to do the same sort of process with the leash. The leash should be attached to the puppy’s collar and the puppy should be able to drag it around with him while he is playing.
In time, he will not notice the leash as he did with the collar. This is when the owner can move to the next step. Just remember not to leave the leash around the puppys neck without you watching him as this could be dangerous.
The last step in dog leash training is to start to hold the end of the leash, walking with the puppy around the house. The leash should always be loose between the dog and the owner, so that the dog is always walking right by the owner’s side. If the puppy starts to pull on the leash, the owner should immediately stop walking and call the puppy so that he comes back to the owner’s side.
As soon as this happens, it would be safe for the owner to start walking again just as long as the puppy stays at the said where the lash is hanging freely. The puppy must be commended from time to time if he is doing well so that he knows that it is pleasurable walking that way.
