Socializing Your Dog
Dogs, like humans, can both be more or less tolerant to other dogs. Some dogs get easily acquainted to a new dog, cat or other animal. Others even have problems with the opposite sex of their own breed. Considering that dogs are social animals by nature this is strange, but still we have to deal with it.
Normally dog lovers like to have other dogs around or other pets like cats, rabbits and the like. To make sure no animal gets hurt isn’t always easy to achieve. Especially when the neighbours’ dog or other animals enter your dogs’ territory, keeping the peace can be a challenge.
To prevent potential problems you better prepare your dog by socializing him as soon as possible. When dogs grow up, very much like adults, it’s more difficult for them to learn the rules of social behavior. It’s very important to expose your dog at the earliest age possible to other people and dogs. When they are still puppies the whole world is new and wonderful and they are very open to new experiences.
When your puppy has received all his vaccines it time to meet other dogs and people. It is important that many different people touch him especially in sensitive places like ears, toes and close to the eyes. This will make the visit to the vet much easier. Off course he needs to meet as many other dogs and animals as possible.
Dogs like to sniff each other. When they’re about to meet another dog you should control the set until you’re confident that both dogs won’t start fighting. Only after that you can let them explore the other dog.
If one of the dogs wants to leap on or bite the other dog, you should let it go until it gets violent. It’s normal dog behavior when they ?fight? which often includes biting lightly each others legs and necks. Stay close and be prepared to interfere, if necessary. You might want to take a pair of leather gloves with you just in case.
Sometimes they start barking which can be annoying. You can try to make him stop by giving him a treat or give him his favorite squeeky toy. If that doesn’t help, just go home and come back the following day. You’ll have to learn what works best for your dog, because each dog is different when it comes to behaving around other dogs. Just take your time and learn how your dogs socializes best.
Rescued or animal shelter dogs can require extra patience when socializing. These animals have often been abused by people or injured by other dogs. Those experiences can lead to aggression or fear. Remarkable transformations have been seen even in these dogs, though. After repeated exposure to other well socialized dogs they often turn in to friendly dogs that interact very well with other people and pets.
Start socializing your dog at the earliest moment possible. Have your puppy meet as many children, men, dogs, cats and other animals as you can. As a result you’ll have a wonderful dog that you can take with you anywhere you like.
