Owning a small dog really isn’t that much different to owning a large one. However, owners need to make a few adjustments to best meet their small dog’s needs. Illustrated below are some points you will need to consider for the daily requirements for a tiny breed of dog.

Feeding the dog:

You must consider the size of the food you buy them from the grocery store as they won’t be able to eat the normal type of food ordinarily purchased for a regular size pooch. Buying a kibble for example must take into consideration the size of their jaw so a smaller one will be required which you may not find in just any store. It is also recommended to offer the Lilliputian canines some canned soft foods.

Methods of containing them:

Every dog needs the following: regular exercise, an outdoor place for his potty needs, and an enclosed area which provides the animal with security. Smaller dogs are much more nimble that larger dogs and what might be a secure environment for one is not necessarily for the other. It may seem bizarre but it has been know for very large birds to actually take tiny dogs from their gardens. Thus a kennel with adequate head cover is what is warranted.

Training:

The problem with this is that most tiny dogs are spoilt by their owners even though they should not be any harder to train – according to dog experts. No matter if he fits in a purse or a pocket, your small dog still sees the world in terms of pack behavior, and if you’re not leading the pack, he is. One of the most important aspects of training is that the dog must imperatively be house trained even if the mess seems insignificant. To make the dog obey your commands, dog experts recommend that the dog must be made to work for you. Have him sit or do tricks before you give him a tasty treat or even his meal.

His appearance:

Small dog care includes some special grooming needs you’ll need to keep in mind. One such specific need for a minuscule pet is that he needs more frequent nail trimming than his larger counterpart since he hardly walks or runs on uneven surfaces which would have naturally shaped up his nails. As they are eating more canned food, their teeth will need to be brushed more regularly (at least twice per week) to eliminate unwanted and harmful deposits. As is evident from the above, caring for a small dog is very much the same for any dog of any size. While each requirement may seem small and insignificant, but when you do it with earnestness, it can make a huge difference in the way you keep a dog.
