Deciding to adopt a Shar Pei rescue dog and give an abused pet a second chance is a wonderful and humane thing to do. Once the dog gets settled into your home you will start to see that personality come through that Shar Pei dogs are known for.

But in the meantime you will need patience and you will need to make sure that you keep an eye out for potentially bad traits and be ready to deal with some of the issues that come along with taking in an abused pet.

Let your new Shar Pei rescue dog check out its new home and just take in all of the new sights and scents. Very quickly the dog will begin to realize that it is in a new situation and that could be good or that could be bad but at least it will have some time to get a feel for where it is and know it is not in the abusive situation anymore.

When your Shar Pei rescue dog is getting adjusted to your home you need to reduce the commotion, noise, and sudden movements that are going on in the home to give the dog a chance to get used to your home. A Shar Pei does not like a lot of sudden movements and can get a little confused and even frustrated when there are a lot of things going on and a lot of activity coming at it. So for the benefit of your new dog you may want to keep the clatter down for a little while until the dog gets used to its new home and new family.

The Shar Pei is one of the most intelligent dogs there is and they take to training very well. However an abused Shar Pei is going to be cautious at first and may seem like they are hesitant to be trained. Be patient and do not punish the dog. You should use only positive reinforcement when training your dog and also be prepared for later on when that hesitation can turn to boredom as your dog gets bored of the repetitive nature of training.

The Shar Pei was originally bred as an extremely intelligent fighting dog so they do have an aggressive nature about them. However a Shar Pei will also develop a strong attachment to their family after a while and that makes them a wonderful family pet.

But because of what your Shar Pei rescue dog has been through it may display those primal signs of aggression when you first get it. Do not panic and just use a lot of love and patience. The Shar Pei is smart and will eventually catch on that everything is okay but in the meantime just be patient.

Your new Shar Pei rescue dog has the potential to be a wonderful family pet but only if you take the time to help it work through its past. A Shar Pei is very smart and after a while it will begin to realize that it is in a new situation with a family that loves it and it will respond to that. Just give it time and enjoy your new dog!
