Learn the Basics of Pet Health Plans
People all over the world regard their animals as family members. They could keep small creatures, or 100 pound Labs. These pets can expect the same treatment as their human companions; even down to their pet health care plan.
According to the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association, Americans spent roughly $10.1 billion for pet health care in 2007 ” a 40 percent increase from 2006. The insurance industry isn’t ignoring these numbers. Jack Stephens, founder of Pet’s Best Insurance, says that Americans spend roughly $250 million annually on pet insurance. That figure is expected to increase to $1 billion by 2011, he says. That makes pet insurance one of the fastest growing insurance lines.
Pet health insurance is a health insurance policy for your pet. This could be almost any animal, but most often is a dog or cat. Much like human insurance, you can choose a policy as simple or elaborate as you need.
Like any insurance, you don’t know when you’re going to need it. Unfortunately with animals, if they end up having surgery the costs can spiral so quickly. Equally, pedigree dogs are more prone to certain conditions.
In recent months, the ASPCA has noticed a significant increase in the number of people calling it who simply cannot afford the veterinary care that their animal requires.
Generally, pet care plans cover bills due to injuries and illnesses. They also cover preventative care and vaccinations. Some plans will also cover a portion of obedience training costs and flea/tick medications.
These plans also cover micro chipping to help locate a lost pet and some will even cover the cost of advertising and rewards to help locate your lost pet. Some even offer travel reimbursement if a trip is cut short due to a pet related cancellation.
You must be aware of the terms of each policy though, and not shop purely based on price. This is an important family member, and adequate coverage should be your first goal.
Pet health insurance is becoming more common every day. It’s a great feeling knowing that your pet will be taken care of no matter what sort of emergency comes up.
No one wants to make the choice to end the life of their pet when faced with a huge treatment bill. Wallace Sife, who as founder of the Association for Pet Loss and Bereavement has counseled hundreds of guilt-racked pet owners, said, “There is no right answer.”
While a pet insurance plan won’t spare you from the emotional hardship of a pet needing expensive care, it can free you from worrying about the financial stress, and hopefully help you make a better decision.
These are some of the basics of pet insurance plans. There will still be some more research to do when choosing the right plan for your needs. This is often as simple as a web search for companies websites to compare the different plans and coverages. It’s important not to get hung up on price as your sole shopping criteria. The cheapest plan may not necessarily be the best deal. Ultimately, you want to be sure that your pet will be provided with the best care should there ever be a need. This will keep you both happy for many years to come.
