Dog fleas are perhaps the most common dog health condition. Treating dog fleas can be difficult especially if the treatment of the flea infestation has been delayed.

Dog fleas are parasites that bite the dog in order to feed. Fleas can be picked up by the dog from grass, other dogs, or the dogs living environment.

The discomfort from flea bites is not the only problem associated with flea infestations. Many dogs are allergic to flea saliva which can cause rashes and hair loss. Dog fleas also pose the risk of diseases the fleas may be carrying.

Why is it important to treat dog fleas at the first sign of a dog flea infestation? Dog fleas multiple at astounding rates. The dog fleas not only infest the dogs fur, but can also become a household infestation.

Treating dog fleas must include treating the fleas of the dog and getting rid of fleas in the dogs environment in order to be effective. For treating fleas on the dog, flea shampoos, flea collars, and monthly applications of flea repellents can be used.

For treating fleas in the house, all the carpets need to be thoroughly vacuumed. The use of a high-powered vacuum or shop vacuum is often recommended. Even wood floors should be vacuumed since fleas, flea eggs, and flea larvae may be present in the crevices of the floor boards.

Dog bedding and other cloth around the dog should be washed in hot water and dried on high heat if it will not damage the material. Surfaces that come in contact with the dog like pet kennels and feeding dishes should be washed with hot, soapy water.

Flea spray and flea bombs are flea treatments for the home. The areas of the home where the dog spends most of its time should be sprayed. A flea bomb is used to treat several rooms at once.

The dog owner should carefully follow the instructions on all flea treatment products for the dog and the house. Flea treatments are chemicals that are potentially dangerous especially if the dog owner does not follow the directions.
