Excessive Barking

One of the natural characteristics of dogs is that they bark. Short of speaking English, or whatever their owner’s native language may be, barking is the quintessential dog-speak. Barking is natural to every dog on the face of the earth. Dogs bark for a number of reasons. They may bark to alert their owners to an intruder. Sometimes they bark for the sheer pleasure of howling, responding to another canine across the street, or just to let you know dinner time is long past.

Usually, when your dog barks, he’s got good reason to do so. He barks to fulfill his dog duties, typically to your benefit. He may be an avid devotee of barking by virtue of his hopes in gaining your attention. Barking is also a dog’s way of marking his territory. In dog speak, several loud barks serve to inform the neighborhood that he’s on the job. Other dogs are warned off your territory and potential intruders are put on notice. Barking dog behaviors are subtle indicators of the ideal pet. While the barking dog behavior is natural and in fact, desirable, when, where and how do you draw the line between normal and the excessive?

The syndrome of barking dog behavior is one of the most difficult behaviors to manage. You want to get along with your neighbors and you don’t want your pet to be a nuisance. What constitutes too much barking?

Your definition may not match up with your next door neighbor’s definition. If you’re an apartment dweller, your trusty dog’s barking may annoy your neighbors to no end, even though he’s contributing to the safety of the neighborhood in general. The rural dog has far more latitude in manifesting his enthusiastic and dutiful barking dog behavior. He can bark to his heart’s content, letting every canine from here to next week know that he means business. The rural dog’s neighbors won’t regard this barking dog behavior as an anomaly. In a country setting, it’s considered the norm. On the other hand, if you’re living in a condo with your neighbors just a stone’s throw away, excessive barking dog behavior won’t fly.

In determining what’s excessive barking dog behavior, you need a good measure of common sense. Dogs love to bark and they are usually doing everyone a service. However, if you find that your dog is barking over every little thing, real or imagined, a professional dog trainer may be the answer.

Have you heard of the barkless dog? Now there’s a dilemma! This dog won’t bark on a bet! This dog will be silent, even as an intruder with ill intent breaks into your home. Your dog may be the most loyal of pets, but falls short when it comes to protection.

Curbing your barking dog behavior is not a straightforward question. Is it good or bad? Fido is exercising his natural instincts. Help him along and keep the peace.
