It is always an exhilarating moment when a new dog joins your household. Whether you get a new puppy or an older dog this is the time when you need to make sure that you are doing whatever you can to socialize your new family member. It is better for everyone if you do what you can to socialize your new dog because he is expected to come upon countless new and distinct situations throughout his life and he needs to realize early on how to react in healthy and suitable conduct.

A new puppy can commence learning socialization skills as early as 2 to 3 weeks following birth. Usually a family will acquire a new puppy at about 7 to 8 weeks old. Puppies tend to be more shy and afraid until they are about 14 weeks old so during the early days be tender with your new puppy.

While socialization skills should be trained early you should also continue to practice throughout your dog’s life. Many situations and circumstances can transform a dog from sociable and outgoing to nervous, frightened and even aggressive. It is vital to persistently present your dog to new situations, people and animals.

Acquaint your dog with other dogs and other animals. You can do this at a neighborhood park or even a doggie daycare. If you have friends with pets, visiting them is always a nice way to socialize your dog around other animals. Be sure that your dog is continuously up to date on his vaccinations but it is critical for him to be around other animals.

The people who come to your house the most should all be acquainted with your dog. The mailperson comes by day after day so it is a helpful idea to introduce them. Anyone who stops by your house regularly should be a friend to your dog. If workable make sure that your dog has time around many various people as it will make him more sociable in different situations.

Dogs are naturally pack animals. They lived in the wild in packs and they will reconstruct the pack hierarchy in their new situation. It is fundamental that everyone in the family is seen as a more dominant pack member. That means that when a human speaks the dog listens and obeys. You are the alpha dog and your dog is the follower.

Socialization needs to carry on throughout your dog’s life. He needs to continuously meet new people, new dogs and other animals. If not he could become apprehensive and form hard-to-resolve problems such as biting and fighting.

Your dog training will be more successful and you and other people will like your pet more if he is appropriately socialized and well-behaved in the majority of situations.
