A new puppy can commence learning socialization skills as early as 2 to 3 weeks following birth. Usually a family will acquire a new puppy at about 7 to 8 weeks old. Puppies tend to be more shy and afraid until they are about 14 weeks old so during the early days be tender with your new puppy.
While socialization skills should be trained early you should also continue to practice throughout your dog’s life. Many situations and circumstances can transform a dog from sociable and outgoing to nervous, frightened and even aggressive. Dogs are naturally pack animals. They lived in the wild in packs and they will reconstruct the pack hierarchy in their new situation. You are the alpha dog and your dog is the follower.
Socialization needs to carry on throughout your dog’s life. He needs to continuously meet new people, new dogs and other animals. If not he could become apprehensive and form hard-to-resolve problems such as biting and fighting.
Your dog training will be more successful and you and other people will like your pet more if he is appropriately socialized and well-behaved in the majority of situations.
